![]() ![]() One can examine the strength, house position, aspects received, and other factors of the Lagnesha, and thereby gain a great deal of understanding about a person. I will be referring to the ruler of the Ascendant as the Lagnesha for the remainder of this article. In Vedic astrology, because the Ascendant is called the Lagna, the ruler of the Ascendant is called the Lagnesha (pronounced lug-NAY-sha) - the ruler ( esha) of the Lagna. In Western astrology, the ruler of the Ascendant is dubbed the Ruler of the Chart. Therefore, the planet ruling the Ascendant is the one that most represents the person. 1 But there will always be a planet that rules the sign of the 1st house, i.e., the ruler of the Ascendant. However, in a specific chart, the 1st house may or may not be occupied by (or aspected by) by any planet. Therefore, in exploring a person's chart, we look to the First House to assess the person themselves. The 1st house in Vedic astrology represents the owner of the chart, including his or her personality, vitality, appearance, body, and nature.
